Hunger and Poverty:
1 in 10 Canadians is considered poor – Statistics Canada

-Children make up 25% of the population, but account for almost 40% of those who use food banks.

3.9 million Canadians are considered “food insecure”. Meanwhile Canadians produce 7 million tons or organic waste each year!

Do the math.

50% of those who use food banks are income assistance recipients. The average individual who relies on Ontario Works for income will be required to spend over 80% of that money on rent alone each month. This will leave only 20% each month for utilities, clothing, and food. 93,000 people each month access a food bank for the first time. 35% of Food banks are having difficulty meeting the growing demands 55% of food banks needed to cut back on the amount of food provided to each household. -Hunger count 2011
