What We Do

Our programs will focus on providing alternatives to the food system, and services that relieve students from food insecurity while challenging the structures that create food insecurity in the first place.

Access to food assistance:
15781_10152778004314379_5832827109770147498_nOur main service is providing access to food assistance to all UTM students who are food insecure. Our Food Centre provides perishable/canned food as well as produce/fresh food to all our members. Our membership process is simple and does not involve any qualification tests or financial checks. Please see the “Access Food Assistance” section for more details.

Food Justice Assembly:
1798461_768373429840821_717779754_nA space for students to exchange ideas and engage in collective action around our campus food system. We wish to engage our members through this assembly in the decision-making that affects our Food Centre. We also wish to engage all students in creating effective change in our campus food system. This assembly meets once a week in room 100 at the Student Centre. It is open for all students, whether they are Food Centre members or not. Our confidentiality policy is in effect. Please see the “Food Justice Assembly” section under “Initiatives” for more details.

Campus Food Garden:
10393176_10152528636209379_844188630139912577_nThe UTM Food Centre works with other clubs, departments and groups on campus to maintain a Community Food Garden. This organic garden is a space for all students to come together and grow their own food. All Food Centre members are encouraged to participate in this program, as all participants are allowed to take a portion of the harvest. The other half of the harvest goes to our Food Centre where it is distributed to all our members. Please see the “Community Food Garden” section for more information.

Advocacy:

1383565_579672915414429_1685436450_nIn partnership with other clubs, organizations and UTMSU ministries, we work to create a more educated and more engaged student body around food insecurity and related food system issues. We create workshops, blogs, awareness campaigns, assist students conducting research, and organize trips! For more information please see our “Volunteer” section and our “News and Blog” section.
