Food Justice Assembly

1798461_768373429840821_717779754_nThis is a space for members and non-members alike to organize and exchange ideas around the intersection of food insecurity, sustainability, political/economic policies, health, and structural socio-economic inequalities. We will focus on creating a just food system that does not produce systems of inequality. We seek to provide a space for community building where conversations, exchange and collective actions could forge change.

We will facilitate discussions and hear students’ criticisms of food services on campus, especially the UTM Food Centre. We will discuss problems with the campus food system as a whole, such as student food insecurity, and try to come up with solutions. This assembly will also take interest in our campus food contract and the role of our food service providers such as Chartwells. Furthermore, making our campus food system more sustainable by reducing food miles, increasing environmentally conscious food purchases, and reducing food waste. We wish to engage students in a discussion about food insecurity and action that seeks to minimize food insecurity and the stigma around it.

All members are encouraged to attend the Assembly meetings. For the sake of confidentiality and productive conversations, we will address all attendees as Assembly Participants, whether they are Food Centre members, volunteers or students who are not usually involved in the Food Centre. All confidentiality rules and standards apply. Volunteers who attend will not be allowed to identify anyone as a Food Centre member. Food Centre members will be asked to refrain from identifying each other as Food Centre members. We will ask all participants to observe the UTMSU equity policy during the meetings.
